Media Advisory: Minister of Veterans Affairs to Participate in Events in Newfoundland and Labrador

ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR--(Marketwire - Aug. 14, 2009) - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, will participate in several events in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador on August 16 and 17, 2009.

On Sunday, Minister Thompson will attend the opening ceremony at The Royal Canadian Legion Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Command 61st Biennial Convention. Monday morning, Minister Thompson will deliver a keynote address updating delegates on Veterans Affairs Canada programs and services.

Later in the day, Minister Thompson will participate in the official opening of the Sir Winston Churchill Wing of the Caribou Memorial Veterans Pavilion. Veterans Affairs Canada partnered with Eastern Health to extend and renovate the facility which currently houses Second World War and Korean War Veterans. In addition to general site upgrades, the expansion created a specialized Dementia Care Unit. Veterans Affairs Canada provided $3 million for the expansion and $200,000 for upgrades.
