Media Advisory: Minister of National Defence Visits CF Members in Haiti

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 5, 2010) - The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, will visit the troops in Haiti this weekend, to oversee progress being made following the disastrous earthquake that struck that nation in January. The Minister will speak with Canadian Forces personnel on board HMCS Athabaskan, in medical facilities, temporary accommodation camps and the Canadian Embassy.

"The Canadian Forces are playing a critical role creating the conditions for the Haitian Government and relief agencies to provide for the emerging needs of Haiti," Minister MacKay said. "As the Canadian Forces' meet emergency relief objectives, we will transfer our responsibilities to local partners and civilian organizations."

The CF continues to provide support and assistance though on-going participation and collaboration with MINUSTAH, the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti.
