Media Advisory: Mississauga Fire & Emergency Services 2009 Firefighter Recruitment Program

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 9, 2009) - Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services launches its Firefighter Recruitment Program on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 to fill anticipated vacancies.

"A career in the Fire Service is more than putting out fires; it's about making the community a safe place for people to live and work," said Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services Chief John McDougall. "Firefighting is a very physically demanding and challenging career choice and is one that is very highly respected by the communities that we serve. We encourage all of those who are interested and meet the qualifications, to consider a career with Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services."

To be eligible for consideration you must:

  • be eligible to work in Canada (i.e. Canadian Citizen, landed immigrant, or possess a work permit)
  • be a Secondary School graduate or equivalent as established by the Ontario Ministry of Education
  • hold a valid, unrestricted Ontario Driver's Licence Class "D" with a "Z" air brake endorsement (or out of Province equivalent) with a driving record that is acceptable to the City of Mississauga, by the date of hire. Proof will be required. (current G1 & G2 licenses not acceptable)
  • have uncorrected 20/30 in each eye and colour vision which is safe for firefighting
  • be willing to work shifts on a rotating basis
  • be able to swim proficiently
  • hold valid Standard First Aid & CPR "C" Level (Basic Rescuer) Certificates (valid certificates are within 2 years of certification date, or prior to expiry date). A valid certificate must have a certification date no later than the testing date of November 22, 2009 to be valid
  • have effective English communication skills
  • successfully complete comprehensive written, medical and physical tests;
  • meet hearing requirements without artificial aids
  • be able to handle intense and sustained physical effort necessary to safely perform firefighting duties
  • have no criminal conviction for which a pardon has not been granted

Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications listed above will be eligible to write the required firefighter test. An administration fee of $155.00 will be required when registering for testing. Results of the firefighter testing will determine which candidates are selected to participate in further processes, including skills review and participation in the interview stage of the recruitment process.

Candidates may only apply online at www.mycitycareer.ca beginning Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at 9 a.m. (EDT). Applications must be completed no later than Friday, October 30, 2009 at 4 p.m. (EDT).
