Media Advisory: National Child Care and Early Learning Expert to Make Deputation to Windsor Council Tonight

WINDSOR, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 1, 2010) - Martha Friendly, one of the country's foremost child care and early learning experts, will make a deputation to Windsor City Council tonight calling on the city to defer its decision on whether to shut down the city's seven municipal child care centres plus two satellites.

Friendly is the founder and coordinator of Childcare Resource and Research Unit, a policy and research oriented facility that focuses on early childhood education, and child care and family policy in Canada and internationally. She is also co-author of About Canada- Childcare, an authoritative examination of early childhood education and childcare in Canada.

"The seriousness of a possible closure of Windsor's municipal centres is an important provincial issue as well as a local one, which is why I've requested the opportunity to make a deputation," says Friendly, who opposes the closure of these high quality childcare centres. "City Council needs to take into account the government's introduction of its full day early learning program, as well as the importance of quality child care and its impact on early learning. As a researcher, I can offer insight into these issues."

WHEN: Monday February 1, 2010
Council meeting begins at 6:00 pm

WHERE: Windsor City Council Chambers

WHO: Martha Friendly, founder and coordinator of the
  Childcare Resource and Research Unit
