Media Advisory: National Defence-Military to Conduct Combat Training Exercise at Downsview

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - May 13, 2005) - Elements of the Canadian Army's Reserve Brigade in the Greater Toronto Area will be rehearsing small-unit combat tactics at the Downsview Training Area in Downsview Park on Saturday, May 14, 2005. Several hundred soldiers of 32 Canadian Brigade Group, in companies and platoons, will practise assaulting trenches prepared in the training area for the purpose. They will be using a combination of laser simulation and blank ammunition.

Although parts of the training may be visible from Sheppard Avenue West, all of the activity will be confined to the Downsview Training Area adjacent to Denison Armoury. The troops will embark on buses late Saturday night to continue the exercise Sunday at CFB Borden.

This training (called Exercise Iron Talon) is part of a series of exercises, which will culminate in manoeuvres involving all of Ontario's Reserve brigades at CFB Petawawa in late August.

All of this tactical training is designed to prepare Reserve soldiers to join Canadian deployments overseas. The organizational, communications and other basic skills refined in these exercises are, however, valuable in both domestic and international operations. Since the early 1990s, several hundred soldiers of 32 Canadian Brigade Group have served in United Nations and NATO missions to Cyprus, Croatia, Bosnia, Ethiopia and Eritrea, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan and the Golan Heights.
