Media Advisory: Ottawa Bear Hug III: Raising Money for Cancer Research

A partnership between the Sens Foundation and the Ottawa Catholic School Board

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 4, 2010) - The Sens Foundation and the Ottawa Catholic School Board are inviting members of the media to attend Bear Hug III along the banks of the Rideau Canal on Friday, May 7, at 11 a.m.

What: More than 15,000 students and teachers from 15 local schools representing the Ottawa Catholic School Board will attempt to make Ottawa the bear hug capital of the world by establishing a new Guinness World Record for the largest hug. In addition to the record-breaking attempt, the event will also serve as a fundraiser to benefit the Sens Foundation and local charities, including Roger's House, the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation and the Ottawa Hospital.

The goal of Bear Hug III is to raise $500,000 and re-claim the Guinness World Record for the largest bear hug, originally set in 2004.

Who: Patrick McNulty, president of the Bear Hug Committee; Julian Hanlon, deputy director of education, Ottawa Catholic School Board; Sens Foundation president Danielle Robinson; Bassell and Milad Khalil of Napoli's Café, the presenting sponsor of the event; Ottawa Senators forward Jesse Winchester; and Max Keeping, former CTV Ottawa vice-president of news and public affairs. Senators forward Nick Foligno, Bear Hug III captain, will be unable to attend the event due to his participation at the 2010 IIHF World Hockey Championship being held May 7-23 in Germany.

Where: Bear Hug III will take place along the banks of the Rideau Canal, a World Heritage Site, from the Plaza bridge to the Pretoria Bridge, located along Queen Elizabeth Dr. and Colonel By Dr. VIP guests will be invited to take part on the Corktown pedestrian bridge, which links Somerset St. West to the University of Ottawa.
