Media Advisory/PIPSC: May Day Rally for Public Service Professionals

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 30, 2008) - Public service professionals will rally in solidarity in downtown Ottawa on the occasion of International Workers' Day on May 1st to demand that their employer take action at the bargaining table.

Date: Thursday, May 1, 2008 at NOON

Location: Treasury Board Secretariat
L'Esplanade Laurier
Laurier Avenue West at Bank Street, OTTAWA

Some 40,000 PIPSC members are currently working without a contract. Their bargaining teams have each presented three constructive solutions to help resolve the recruitment and retention problem facing the federal public service. For the employer (ie. Treasury Board), this is a golden opportunity to be forward-thinking and innovative. Yet, Treasury Board has come to the bargaining table unprepared and apathetic. To PIPSC bargaining teams, it has become evident that TB negotiators are wasting time at the table - have they no mandate to bargain? For the past several weeks, PIPSC groups have been unable to advance proposals, except for a few words or punctuation in standard clauses. The government seems to be entrenched against providing fair recognition of the contributions of its professionals.

The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada is a national union representing 55,000 professionals across Canada.
