Media Advisory: President of CUPE Ontario to March With Indigenous Rights Activists

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 23, 2010) - On Thursday, the President of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Ontario, Fred Hahn, will march in solidarity with Indigenous rights activists from across Ontario.

Part of the lead up to the G20 summit in Toronto, June 24 has been declared a day of action on Indigenous rights with the theme: Tell the world the truth about Canada's record on Indigenous rights.

"The economic policies that are being promoted by the G8 and G20—policies that erode the public sector and create precarious jobs—are part of an economic system that has also failed to fully recognize indigenous rights," says Hahn. "We need to acknowledge these connections and stand in solidarity with Indigenous people who are fighting to protect their land, their water and their rights."

The rally and march is being organized as a non-violent protest under Indigenous leadership and will begin at 11:00 a.m. at Queen's Park.
