Media Advisory - Street theatre targets cigarette smuggling

Scandalous! A ‘smoke-shack’ with illegal cigarettes in sight of Parliament Hill.

Attention: Health/Medical Editor, News Editor OTTAWA --(CCNMatthews - Feb. 1, 2007) - To draw attention to the steady growth in the sale of bootleg cigarettes, health groups have erected a smoke-shack right in the heart of Ottawa.

"We are tired of Ottawa ignoring this problem," said Neil Collishaw, research director for Physicians for a Smoke-Free Canada. "So we are bringing it as close to the center of government as we are allowed." Their 'smoke-shack' will be displayed on the south-east corner of Wellington and Elgin on Friday, February 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The smoke-shack will be stocked with familiar brands of illegal cigarettes - including many brands manufactured on illegal factories within a few hundred kilometers of Parliament Hill.
