Media Advisory: World's Biggest Pond Hockey Championship This Weekend in Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 23, 2008) - The opening horn blows at 2 pm, this Friday, January 25 for the Source For Sports Canadian National Pond Hockey Championships - the largest pond hockey event presented since the advent of the game.

More than 500 games will be contested Friday through Sunday, as 144 teams give it their all to advance to the Women's and Men's Open Championships. Ontario's North has served up near perfect ice conditions for competitors. This is a fantastic spectacle of hockey's roots and Canadian culture. Admission is free for spectators.

We invite media to join us at Deerhurst Resort to witness the experience first hand, or interview executive director Neil Lumsden from the championship grounds.

- Hundreds of teams from all walks of life each with their own colourful story.

- Action will be intense on the Deerhurst Resort Sunset Bay - a 6-acre pond in scenic Muskoka. 48 teams will play simultaneously on the massive natural surface.

- Catch the behind-the-scenes action as championship organizers and volunteers pull off this major feat - the equivalent of about half of the regular NHL season will be played out in a single weekend!

- The pilgrimage of players and spectators will begin early Friday, and crowds will intensify 2 hours before the games commence

- See first hand Executive Director Neil Lumsden's vision for this amazing event, which has grown to become the world's largest in just three years!

- Witness the victors drink from the Maple Cup - the colourful trophy that has earned a spot in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Action Takes place as follows:

Friday, January 25 - 2 pm to 7:30 pm

Saturday, January 26 - 8:30 am to 7:30 pm

Sunday, January 27 - 8:30 am to 2 pm

The 16 men's and 8 women's teams that advance to the elimination round will be announced Saturday evening.

Elimination games will be contested Sunday leading to Women's Open Championship at 12:30 pm and the Men's Open Championship at 1:30 pm.
