Media Alert: One School System Calls for Legislative Committee to Study Continuation of Public Funding to Roman Catholic Schools

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 1, 2007) - The One School System Network will hold a press conference beside the statute of Father of Confederation, George Brown, defender of a one school system in Ontario, at Queen's Park, Toronto, starting at 11:30am on Wednesday October 3, 2007.(i)

The OSSN, through its co-ordinator, Dr Bryan Kerman, will comment on the change of policy by Conservative leader, John Tory, to allow any of his party's elected members to vote freely on the issue of extended public funding to religious schools in Ontario. Dr Kerman will point out the insufficiencies of Mr Tory's call, as well as the need for an all party peace-treaty on the issue followed by the formation of a Legislative Committee to recommend a course of action to the government.

The OSSN, through Malcolm Buchanan, former executive secretary of OSSTF and a spokesman for OSSN member group, Civil Rights in Public Education, will also comment on the position taken by the Canadian Civil Rights Association in calling for a constitutional amendment to eliminate any and all public funding of religious schools in Ontario. Mr Buchanan will also comment on criticism of the CCLA call by the Liberal Party and Catholic interests.

Jan Johnstone, spokesperson for the Progressive Trustees, a member group of OSSN, will discuss the recently announced position of the Ontario Public School Boards Association to openly present and discuss its support for a One School System.

Justin Trottier, Executive Secretary of OSSN member group, Center for Inquiry, will introduce the newest members of OSSN and announce the results of a petition for One School System in Ontario.
