Media Release-Local Residents in Need to Receive Free Oral Health Kits

London area dentists donate 3,000 kits

LONDON, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 25, 2008) - Local residents in need will benefit from an initiative by the London & District Dental Society (LDDS) by receiving a kit that will help prevent cavities and build healthy smiles.

"London-area dentists are happy to be able to give back on such a large scale to help those in need," says Dr. Giulio Spagnulo, Secretary Treasurer of the LDDS. "There's a direct link between oral health care and overall health and well-being. Unfortunately, many people can't afford toothpaste, let alone a toothbrush."

On April 25, 3,000 home-care kits, which include a toothbrush, dental floss and toothpaste will be distributed to the Boys & Girls Club of London, Crouch Neighbourhood Resource Centre, Mission Services of London / Rotholme Women's and Family Shelter, Merrymount Children's Centre, and Women's Community House. These kits are instrumental in preventing tooth decay and gum disease.

"Almost one in every eight students, ages four and five have untreated cavities," says Dr. Neil Farrell, Dental Director of the Middlesex London Health Unit (MLHU). "There is considerable room for improvement. Every person regardless of age deserves a happy, healthy smile!"

This initiative was funded by the LDDS and the Ontario Dental Association. As well, Henry Schein Canada and P&G Professional Oral Health Canada offered their generous corporate support and matched all of the LDDS's donations.

The MLHU and LDDS have worked closely together on many oral health campaigns to promote the importance of oral health to the public.
