Media Release-OSSTF/FEESO: Provincial Budget Invests in Education and Ontario’s Future

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 26, 2010) - The Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF/FEESO) congratulates Premier McGuinty on a provincial budget that confirms the importance of education, especially in times of economic restraint.

"With this budget, the government has sent a clear message that an investment in public education is an investment in the future of Ontario," said OSSTF/FEESO president, Ken Coran.

The gradual phase-in of the full-day kindergarten program is an example of such an investment. Not only will it create immediate jobs, but by providing children with a healthy and safe place to develop and learn, parents will have the opportunity to work and attend school.

OSSTF/FEESO also approves of the government's commitment of $63.5 million to replace the federal funding for childcare that expires April 1, thus preserving 7,600 subsidized childcare positions.

The federation also applauds the government's plan to create 20,000 new university spaces next fall. We encourage Premier McGuinty to ensure that the increases in university funding fully supports this expansion and that students are not left to cover these expenses through higher tuitions.

Aside from the positive investments in public education, OSSTF/FEESO has some concerns about the "net zero" bargaining stance that the government plans to put into legislation. Such a unilateral move poses a risk to the integrity of future collective bargaining. OSSTF/FEESO has a long history of working closely and collaboratively with the McGuinty government and looks forward to continuing this successful cooperation.

OSSTF/FEESO, founded in 1919, has 60,000 members across Ontario. They include public high school teachers, occasional teachers, educational assistants, continuing education teachers and instructors, psychologists, secretaries, speech-language pathologists, social workers, plant support personnel, attendance counsellors, and many others in education.
