Medline's New Excel Freedom Plus Transport Chair Makes Transporting Patients Safe and Comfortable

At 33 Pounds, New Transport Chair Is 25% Lighter Than Medline's Self-Propelling Chairs

MUNDELEIN, IL--(Marketwire - May 3, 2010) -  As obesity rates continue to rise, there is an increased need for transport chairs capable of carrying heavier patients for extended periods of time in healthcare settings. In response to that need, today, Medline Industries, Inc., the nation's largest privately held manufacturer and distributor of healthcare supplies, introduced the Excel Freedom Plus Transport Chair. It's lightweight, strong and more comfortable than typical self-propelling wheelchairs.

Unlike most wide (22" or wider) transport chairs on the market, Medline's Excel Freedom Plus is made entirely of aluminum and weighs only 33 pounds, which is 25% lighter than some of the self-propelling wheelchairs Medline sells in the market today. With vinyl upholstery, the Freedom Plus is easy to clean and presents fewer potential cross-contamination issues for patients and hospitals. The new transport chair features a 400-lb. weight capacity, comfortable 22" width and a chart pocket on the back of the chair for quick and easy access to patient information. It is also equipped with elevated leg rests to reduce the risk of injury and provide a smooth transition in and out of the wheelchair. Another standard feature is a convenient cup holder for holding the patient's beverage.

"As patient obesity is on the rise, it is critical that hospitals and other healthcare facilities are equipped with durable and appropriate equipment to safely transport patients. The Freedom Plus transport chair is an investment in both the patient and caregiver," said Rich Derks, vice president for Medline's Durable Medical Equipment division. "Medline is committed to building wheelchairs and accessories that last a long time. We want patients safe and comfortable, and our wheelchairs are designed with that purpose in mind."

Medline's full line of wheelchairs includes every type of wheelchair from pediatric to bariatric and is available in various weight capacities, colors, and upholstery choices. Every product undergoes extensive inspection, ensuring that the wheelchairs address the needs of the patient and healthcare customer.

Medline wheelchairs are built with tig welding and a double coating of chrome plating and powder coating on the frame, along with components giving them maximum protection against rusting. Brass-threaded inserts are used to fasten down upholstery to ensure that no stripping occurs over time; aluminum seat cradles and arm locks help the chair resist breakage; and notched, stainless steel ratchet bars on elevated leg rests prevent slipping and rust.
