Message from Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada, on the Death of Soldier Jonathan Dion

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 30, 2007) - My husband, Jean-Daniel Lafond, and I were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Gunner Jonathan Dion, a soldier with the 5e Regiment d'artillerie legere du Canada, during his mission in Afghanistan.

Gunner Dion responded to the call with incredible courage. He was convinced that it is not only a necessity but our duty to help the Afghan community which, above all else, aspires to peace, justice and prosperity after decades of insecurity. Like his brothers and sisters in arms, Gunner Dion gave of himself to the best of his abilities, joining in the multinational efforts to defend and rebuild Afghanistan, serving shoulder to shoulder with thousands of other NATO soldiers and international humanitarian workers.

Our thoughts are also with his comrades who were injured in the same incident, as well as all their families and friends, and their colleagues in Kandahar and Valcartier. On behalf of all Canadians, I want to assure all of them that we are thinking of them during this time.

Michaelle Jean
