Message to Canadians From Public Safety Minister Van Loan: Stay Safe Online

Government of Canada announces October as Cyber Security Awareness Month

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 2, 2009) - The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of Public Safety was joined by Tom Pownall, Officer In Charge of the RCMP Technological Crime Branch and Diane Brisebois, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Retail Council of Canada to kick off Cyber Security Awareness Month.

"As technology advances, criminal activity is moving online into the cyber world," said Minister Van Loan. "This poses a real safety and security threat to individual Canadians, who can become victims. Cyber Security Awareness Month is an opportunity to inform individuals, families, and businesses of the risks we all face and how to stay safe online."

Cyber Security Awareness Month recognizes the efforts of government, the private sector, individuals, and law enforcement in combating the global issue of cyber-crime. Canada is collaborating with law enforcement agencies around the world to promote cyber crime prevention and mitigation activities. The RCMP is actively participating in these international efforts.

"The RCMP is committed to protecting Canadians from cyber crime regardless of the form it takes," said RCMP Commissioner William J.S. Elliott. "We continue to work closely with our Canadian and international law enforcement partners to develop best practices, techniques, and technical solutions to combat cyber crime."

Each October, government and business leaders promote Cyber Security Awareness Month to remind individuals how to protect themselves and to guard against cyber crime. Through this collaboration, the brochure, Protect your computer, your information, your family and yourself is being distributed by retailers across Canada.

"The Retail Council of Canada is pleased to partner with the Government of Canada to help bring awareness to this important issue," said Diane J. Brisebois, President and CEO of the Retail Council of Canada. "The retail sector in Canada is at the forefront of combating cyber crime and is committed to ensuring that customer information remains secure and private."
