Metropolis at Metrotown Going Dark for Earth Hour

BURNABY, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - March 26, 2010) - The iconic Metropolis at Metrotown skyline is going dark March 27 as B.C.'s largest shopping centre joins millions around the world participating in Earth Hour. It is turning off its facade lighting for an hour in a show of support, creating a dramatic void in the Burnaby skyline.

"Taking part in Earth Hour annually is only one of the initiatives that Metropolis at Metrotown has in place to help the environment," says Artie Chumpol, public and community relations manager for the shopping centre.

"Most of the lights we turn off for Earth Hour are the same LED and high-efficiency bulbs used throughout the mall. Also, Metropolis at Metrotown has a very comprehensive recycling program to reduce its carbon footprint."

In addition to Metropolis at Metrotown's facade lights, the shopping centre will also shut off lights in other areas, including its Grand Court, Atrium Court, and readerboard. An estimated 4312.92 kWh of electricity will be saved by the mall during this year's Earth Hour event.

Earth Hour is considered the largest environmental movement in history. It started in Sydney, Australia, three years ago with 2.2 million homes and businesses turning their lights off for one hour. Last year, hundreds of millions of people around the world joined together to support climate action.
