ATTN: Health Care Editors / Education Editors / Business Editors

As a dedicated supporter of innovation and research in the applied health sciences, Dr. C. Joseph Kurian is this year's recipient of The Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences Honorary Diploma of Health Science.

Michener Honorary Diplomas of Health Science are awarded to individuals who demonstrate leadership and commitment to the applied health sciences, as well as dedication to health care innovation and the advancement of applied health sciences education. Recipients are selected by Michener's Board of Governors in May 2009 and the honorary diploma will be conferred at Michener's annual graduation ceremony on October 24, 2009.

Dr. Kurian is the President of Alpha Laboratories, a company that he founded with his wife Kuttimol in 1971. Dr. Kurian's commitment to research and innovation prompted him to venture into e-health with the founding of Alpha Global IT in 2000. Alpha attracts faculty and students from Canadian universities to undertake graduate work. Social justice, fairness and compassion for the underprivileged motivate his activities. His dream is to build a hospital for the marginalized in India and a centre for "street kids" in Toronto. He established the Alpha Charitable Foundation in 1993 to help achieve this dream.

"Dr. Kurian will receive his honorary diploma in recognition of his leadership in the medical community, and his selfless approach to sharing his knowledge and time with those in the applied health sciences and beyond," says Cathy Fooks, Chair, Michener Board of Governors.

The contributions Dr. Kurian has made to the applied health sciences align with two of Michener's core values - transforming lives and embodying excellence - and make him an outstanding candidate for this honour.

Past honourees of Michener's Honorary Diploma of Health Science have included luminaries such as Dr. Donald Stuss, Vice-President Research and Academic Education and Director of the Rotman Research Institute; Mrs. Sonja Bata, Founder of the Bata Shoe Museum and renowned philanthropist; Dr. Amitai Ziv, Founder and Director of the Israel Centre for Medical Simulation and Pediatrician at Hebrew University; Dr. Robert Byrick, Clinical Anesthesiologist at St. Michael's Hospital; Dr. Daniel Klass, Director and Associate Registrar, Quality Management at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario; Dr. Sheela Basrur, Chief Medical Officer of Health and Assistant Deputy Minister of Public Health for Ontario; Dr. David Naylor, President of the University of Toronto; and Dr. Diana Schatz, founder of The Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences.
