Midget Tournament, Players and Coaches’ Clinics Highlight Events at 2010 CIS FINAL 8

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 17, 2010) - In conjunction with Canadian Interuniversity Sport and Scotiabank Place, the host organizing committee for the 2010 CIS Final 8 Men's Basketball Championship presented by Milk today announced three events taking place over the course of Final 8 weekend in Ottawa.

Sponsored by Carleton University and hosted by the Ottawa Shooting Stars and Ottawa Next Level basketball clubs, the CN Capital Classic boys and girls basketball tournament features AA and AAA teams from across Ontario. The tournament runs Friday through Sunday. In addition to the boys' major midget draw, the weekend will also include a girls' draw featuring five elite AAA teams. All tournament games will take place at Carleton University's Ravens' Nest and Norm Fenn gymnasium, beginning on Friday afternoon.

More than 70 area basketball players between the ages of 10 and 17 will be on the court at Scotiabank Place on Thursday evening to take part in the CN Player Clinic, featuring guest instructor Taffe Charles of Carleton, the 2009-10 OUA East women's coach of the year. There are two co-ed age groups – a 10-12-year-old group at 5 p.m. and a 13-17-year-old group at 6:30 p.m. Players of any skill level are welcome and can register online at www.Carleton.ca/athletics.

The CN Coaches' Clinic will take place on Saturday, March 20, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Fenn Gymnasium on the Carleton campus. More than 50 area and school coaches are expected to participate in the session, which will be directed by current CIS coaches Bob Bain (York University) and John Campbell (Dalhousie University), along with former Bishop's University coach Ed Pomykala. The clinic will focus on various drills, skill development and special tactics in addition to both offensive and defensive concepts.

Registration for the players' clinic is open through the end of the day Wednesday, while registrants will be accepted at the door for the coaches' clinic, which begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
