Migrant Worker Exploitation Focus of June 20 Toronto Forum

More Than 300 Migrant Workers, Activists and Labour Leaders Gather at Toronto Forum on Exploitation of Migrant Workers in Canada and Failure of Federal Government Programs to Uphold Labour and Safety Rights

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 18, 2010) -

Attention: Toronto-GTA News/Assignment Editors for Sunday, June 20

UFCW Canada and community allies will be hosting NO RIGHTS, NO RULES: MIGRANT WORKERS IN A GLOBALIZED WORLD — an International Migrant Worker Forum in Toronto on June 20, 2010, from 11:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., in response to the upcoming G8/G20 Summit.

More than 300 migrant workers, community activists, advocates, and labour leaders from across the world will explore the exploitation faced by migrant workers in Canada, and the failure of federal government programs to uphold the labour and safety rights of migrant and temporary foreign workers.

This Forum will also focus on the role of sending nations and the state of migrant workers while in their home country, in the increasingly complex and brutal international migrant workers regime.

Finally, there will be a frank discussion of the steps forward as migrant workers share the stories — and their call for a voice in negotiating their working and living conditions; stepped up enforcement of health and safety regulations; and respect for all the human and labour rights every worker in Canada is guaranteed under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, including the right to unionize.

JOIN US ON SUNDAY, JUNE 20, FATHER'S DAY, with migrant workers from across the globe to map out the step forwards to work with those fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, who leave their homes only be disappointed, neglected and abused through the Canada's Temporary Foreign Workers Program.
