The Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC): Teck's Don Lindsay Receives 2009 Mining Person of the Year Award

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - June 18, 2010) - The Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC) today announced that the 2009 recipient of the MABC Mining Person of the Year Award is Don Lindsay, President and CEO of Teck Resources, in recognition of his outstanding leadership at Teck and ongoing commitment to BC's mining sector and society.

Recipients of the Mining Person of the Year award are those outstanding individuals who lead by example in innovation, safety, sustainable development and corporate social responsibility.

"Don Lindsay's exemplary leadership of Teck Resources during the past year has been widely recognized," stated John McManus, Chairman of the MABC and Senior Vice President, Operations for Taseko Mines Ltd. "In addition to successfully navigating his company through the unprecedented economic challenges of the past year and half, he has strategically positioned Teck to successfully meet the rising global demand for mineral and metal commodities. These accomplishments notwithstanding, MABC wants to particularly recognize Don's ongoing contribution to BC society and its institutions, a commitment that never wavered even during the most difficult period of the economic crisis."

Teck provides sponsorship to multiple organizations in the communities in which they operate worldwide. In British Columbia, these organizations include the BC Children's Hospital Foundation, the University of British Columbia School of Mining, the Nature Conservancy of Canada, YMCA, the Mineral Education Program of BC and United Way. As supplier of the "metal for the medals", Teck was also one of the most prominent sponsors of Vancouver's 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, a wonderful legacy for Canadians.

Globally, Teck continues to actively support and contribute to the Millennium Development Goals, making direct investments in community development focusing in the areas of poverty alleviation though creating access to clean water, nutrition, education, and economic development. As Chair of the International Zinc Association, Don spearheaded the launch of the Zinc Saves Kids initiative designed to improve the survival, growth and development of undernourished children by supporting UNICEF-sponsored zinc programs around the world. UN Global Compact has also recognized Teck as a Global Compact Leader for the company's commitment to responsible business practices in human rights, labour practices, environment and anti-corruption.

MABC represents companies involved in the exploration and development, mining and smelting of minerals, metals, coal and industrial minerals in British Columbia. It is regarded as the pre-eminent voice of mining in the province.

The MABC's Executive Committee acts as the Nominating and Award Adjudication Committee for the Mining Person of the Year Award.
