Minister Ambrose Welcomes the Agreement Between Air Canada and the Canadian Union of Public Employees

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 22, 2009) - The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Labour, welcomed the news this morning that Air Canada and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) have reached an agreement with the assistance of the federally-appointed mediators.

"Labour stability is one of the keys in ensuring the ability of Air Canada to navigate through this period of global economic uncertainty," said Minister Ambrose. "It was in the interest of both Air Canada and CUPE to make the extra effort to settle their differences and I would like to congratulate them. I also want to thank the federally-appointed mediators for their valuable work in assisting the two parties in reaching a settlement."

Last week, Minister Ambrose appointed the Honourable James Farley and
Mr. Jacques Lessard, Regional Director for Quebec of the Labour Program's Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, as mediators to assist Air Canada and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) in resolving their outstanding labour issues.

Pursuant to section 105 of the Canada Labour Code, the Minister of Labour may appoint mediators to confer with the parties to a dispute or difference and endeavour to assist them in reaching an agreement.
