Minister Blackburn and the Canadian Delegation to Mark 65Th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 29, 2010) - The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture), will lead an official delegation to the Netherlands to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands and Victory in Europe Day (VE-Day). Commemorative events will take place from May 3 to May 9, 2010.

"Each and every Veteran has a unique and remarkable story to tell. The youth representatives travelling with them will have a rare opportunity to hear their stories first hand and to reflect on their sacrifices and accomplishments in helping the people of the Netherlands," said Minister Blackburn. "I look forward to hearing these stories and to witnessing this return to a country with which we share a powerful history."

The delegation travelling overseas includes Second World War Veterans, representatives of Veterans' organizations, a modern-day Veteran, youth delegates, and parliamentarians. Key events will include commemorative ceremonies at the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery on May 3, the Holten Canadian War Cemetery on May 4, and the Bergen-op-Zoom Canadian War Cemetery on May 6. These are major Canadian war cemeteries where thousands of Canadians who fought in Europe are now buried. Among the guests will be Her Majesty Queen Beatrix and Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet, as well as other high-ranking Dutch officials.

In addition to the official delegation, more than 2,000 Canadian students, teachers and administrators from more than 85 schools across Canada will travel to the Netherlands for events leading up to the commemoration of VE-Day on May 8, the end of the Second World War in Europe.
