Minister Blackburn Engages Business Communities on International Labour Issues

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Jan. 7, 2008) - The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Labour and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, is visiting Edmonton and Calgary today as part of a trip across Canada to promote the reintegration of reservists into the work force, and Canada's labour cooperation agreements in the Americas.

During a luncheon in Edmonton, Minister Blackburn addressed members of the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce. The Minister took this opportunity to discuss the Government of Canada's renewed engagement in the Americas seeking to increase prosperity and improve security throughout the hemisphere.

"Our government's engagement and its activities in the Americas give us the opportunity to share and promote our Canadian values of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law," said Minister Blackburn. "Moreover, by negotiating stronger labour cooperation agreements with other countries, we are trying to ensure respect for worker rights and to protect Canadian businesses from unfair competition," added the Minister.

Minister Blackburn will also be addressing members of the 41 Canadian Brigade Group Reserve in Calgary as part of his national speaking tour to reservists. "Canadian Forces Reserve personnel play a vital role in protecting Canada's interest at home and abroad," declared Minister Blackburn. "We are committed to ensuring that reservists are successfully reintegrated into the Canadian work force when they return from active duty."

The Edmonton and Calgary visits are part of a five-city tour that will bring Minister Blackburn to Vancouver, Toronto and Kingston to highlight the Government of Canada's commitments from the Speech from the Throne to strengthen Canada's place in the world and to move forward on a plan to modernize reservist reinstatement policies.
