Minister Clement Applauds Strong Canadian Showing at 2009 Paris International Air Show

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 19, 2009) - The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, today extended congratulations to many leading Canadian aerospace companies for their performance at the 2009 Paris International Air Show. Canadian aerospace firms announced over $2.1 billion in new orders, demonstrating that Canada continues to move up the value chain and is widely considered a supplier of choice to the world.

"I want to congratulate the Canadian delegation for a strong presence at the show," said Minister Clement. "They did a great job representing our country. While we are not immune to the difficult market conditions, the Canadian aerospace industry continues to show diversity and resilience."

Canada is home to a wide range of expertise in aerospace. Companies from across the country were able to showcase their world-class capabilities, highly skilled workers and leading-edge technologies and innovations, including those that will help reduce aviation's footprint on the environment.

Canadian firms are considered among global leaders in the development and design of regional aircraft, flight simulators and training, small gas turbine engines, helicopters, landing gear systems and environmental control systems.

Canada's aerospace industry has revenues of $22.7 billion and employs 85 000 Canadians in good high-paying jobs in over 400 firms. It also features important industrial clusters and is home to numerous small and medium-sized enterprises that occupy crucial parts of global supply chains, as well as leading multinational companies. The industry exports approximately $18.4 billion annually and the sector invests approximately $1.3 billion in research and development.

The 2009 Paris International Air Show was held in Le Bourget, France, from June 15 to 21, 2009. It is a flagship event for the aerospace and aviation industries, and companies from around the world were in attendance.
