Minister Day Announces Investment in Ontario Crime Prevention Projects and National Research

HAMILTON, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 10, 2008) - Today the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, announced more than $7.7 million in funding to support 15 crime prevention projects in communities across Ontario and one national research project at Queen's University.

"Our Government is serious about keeping our communities safe which is why we are focusing on what works," said Minister Day. "With this funding, we are supporting projects in Ontario that demonstrate positive results for those who are most at risk."

"Community safety is a priority for the McGuinty government and for the people of Ontario," said Rick Bartolucci, Ontario Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services. "I am proud of Ontario's role on the Crime Prevention Action Fund Review Committee in determining how federal funds are allocated for community safety in Ontario."

"I'm very pleased that the funding announced today is aimed at helping youth across Ontario make better choices for their future," said Chief William Blair, President of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police. "We all benefit when young people are given support and assistance to enable them to lead productive, positive lives."

Crime prevention efforts are focused on priorities established in partnership with stakeholders using careful analysis of key crime trends.

Priorities for funding include support for vulnerable families and children at risk, preventing youth gang and drug-related crime, preventing recidivism among high-risk groups and prevention in Aboriginal communities.

"Our Government is committed to providing young people with the support they need to help those at risk make good choices and diminish the chance that they will end up committing crimes," added Minister Day.
