Minister Day Commends the RCMP for Dismantling an Alleged Ecstasy and Methamphetamine Laboratory

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 18, 2008) - The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, made the following statement today concerning an announcement by the RCMP, of two arrests involving an alleged ecstasy and methamphetamine laboratory in Repentigny, QC.

"Dangerous drugs such as ecstasy and illicit methamphetamine continue to destroy lives, tear families apart and rob young people of their lives. Fortunately, as a result of this operation, a sizable amount of illicit drugs, including 44,000 ecstasy pills and 83,000 methamphetamine pills will be kept off our streets. RCMP officers also seized equipment that could otherwise have been used to produce more of these dangerous designer drugs.

I commend the RCMP officers who participated in Operation Chimie for their efforts throughout this three-month investigation. These arrests are a significant achievement in our efforts to prevent drug trafficking and drug abuse in Canada. Not only do these harmful activities lead to serious health problems, but they also affect the safety and security of our families and communities.

The Government of Canada remains committed to ensuring that our law enforcement agencies have the tools and resources to tackle crime and to keep our streets free from drugs. Canada's National Anti-Drug Strategy will enhance the ability of law enforcement to combat synthetic drug production and provide additional resources to better disrupt and dismantle criminal organizations involved in the illicit production and distribution of drugs.

We will continue to support the RCMP and other law enforcement organizations as they work to target drug crime and to send a strong message to organized crime that this type of illegal activity will not be tolerated."
