Minister Day Comments on British Columbia Earthquakes

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 5, 2008) - On the morning of January 5, 2008, at 05:39EST an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 originated in the region of the Queen Charlotte Islands. Later, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 occurred off the coast of Bella Bella, BC at approximately 06:01EST. Another earthquake occurred in the same area with a magnitude of 6.5 at 06:44EST.

There were no reports of any damage from today's earthquakes in British Columbia. However, the Government of Canada continues to monitor the situation and works closely with its partners, including the British Columbia Provincial Emergency Program, and U.S. representatives from regional states - Washington, Oregon, and Alaska, as well as the West Coast Alaska Tsunami warning centre and the U.S. Geological Survey.

This is an example of the important work of the Government Operations Centre during an incident. It provides strategic level coordination on behalf of the Government of Canada and collaborates with its partners to ensure the safety and security of all Canadians.
