Minister Finley Presents Medals at the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games

WHISTLER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - March 20, 2010) - Today, at the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games, the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, presented medals to winners from around the world at the Victory Ceremony for Women's Alpine Skiing Super Combined Slalom – Visually Impaired.

"We congratulate the winning athletes, who have overcome obstacles and worked so hard to compete in these Games," said Minister Finley. "We're proud that Canada is being represented by these world-class athletes."

On March 11, 2010, the Government of Canada ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, an international human rights instrument of the United Nations intended to protect the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.

Canada has a range of policies, programs and services that support opportunities for all Canadians, including people with disabilities, to participate fully in society.

The Government of Canada's ongoing commitment to support people with disabilities was demonstrated in Budget 2010, which proposes to extend the Enabling Accessibility Fund and provide an additional $45 million over the next three years. The Fund supports community-based projects across Canada that improve accessibility, reduce barriers, and enable Canadians, regardless of physical or mental ability, to participate in and contribute to their communities and the economy.

Budget 2010 also proposes to improve Registered Disability Savings Plans to allow more flexibility for contributions.

Canada is honoured to welcome the world to the Paralympic Winter Games. The Government of Canada is the largest single contributor to sport in this country and strongly supports sport participation and physical activity among people of all ages and abilities.
