Minister Fortier is pleased with Montreal's nomination for the title

"UNESCO City of Design" Attention: Business/Financial Editor, Media Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor GATINEAU, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - May 18, 2006) - The Honourable Michael M Fortier, Minister for Public Works and Government Services Canada and Minister responsible for Greater Montreal is pleased with the international recognition given to Montreal as "UNESCO City of Design" which was announced yesterday by the Mayor of the city, Gérald Tremblay.

"This prestigious award reinforces Montreal's dynamic reputation on the creative, social and economical level. As a Montrealer and Minister responsible for Montreal, it is with great pride that I offer my sincere congratulations to all the creators and players that were involved in this accomplishment", mentions Minister Fortier.

With this acknowledgement, UNESCO recognizes the effort and enthusiasm of the public and private sectors, and the civil society of Montréal in the area of design. The design sector represents 20 356 jobs in the Montreal region and economic benefits of 750 million dollars.

Montreal is the first city in North America to receive this title. Buenos Aires (Argentina) received it in August 2005 and Berlin (Germany) in November 2005.
