Minister Jean-Pierre Blackburn Announces $51 827 to Combat Homelessness in Alma

ALMA, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 9, 2007) - Today, the Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Labour and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec and Member of Parliament for Jonquiere-Alma, on behalf of the Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, announced $51 827 for a project under the Regional Homelessness Fund, a component of the National Homelessness Initiative.

This project will be managed by the Service d'information et d'intervention en toxicomanie d'Alma. The project is a continuation of the previous renovation project and will allow the organization to finalize work undertaken on its building located on Scott Street in order to ensure ongoing services.

"Canada's New Government is proud to support the Service d'information et d'intervention en toxicomanie d'Alma, a longstanding and well recognized organization in our region," declared Minister Blackburn. "The improvements which will be made with this financial contribution will help the staff and volunteers respond to the needs of their clientele."

"Our government is committed to working with our partners to help those in need to improve their lives," said Minister Solberg. "What is important is that those in need find hope and are offered lasting solutions to support their efforts to fully participate in our society."

In December 2006, Canada's new government announced funding of $270 million over two years for the new Homelessness Partnering Strategy (HPS), a strategy aimed at combating homelessness in communities across Canada.

Human Resources and Social Development Canada's Homelessness Partnering Strategy will take effect April 1, 2007.
