Minister Kenney Issues Statement on Brar Case

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 28, 2008) - Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney issued the following statement on the Brar case:

"The Federal Court recently found that Baljinder Singh Brar, a Canadian citizen convicted of killing his sister-in-law in India after setting her on fire, is eligible to sponsor his new wife to come to Canada. Immigration regulations prohibit those convicted of sexual crimes, or assault against specified relatives, from acting as sponsors, but the Court held they do not apply in the circumstances of this case. I am very concerned with this situation, and have directed the Department to prepare options for regulatory or legislative changes in order to prevent a similar situation from occurring in the future."
