Minister Oda Launches National Tour of Exhibit on Canada's Engagement in Afghanistan

WHISTLER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - June 6, 2009) - At the 2009 Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Federation of Municipalities, the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister for International Cooperation and Vice-Chair of the Cabinet Committee on Afghanistan, launched Afghanistan360, an exhibit on Canada's engagement in Afghanistan that will tour Canadian towns and cities between now and 2011.

"Canada has an important story to tell," said Minister Oda. "Canadians deserve to learn about the work that Canadians are doing in Afghanistan. Afghanistan 360 is a new, innovative way in which they can interact and learn how Canada's efforts are making a difference for the Afghan people."

Afghanistan360 explains Canada's six policy priorities, three signature projects, and the results achieved in Afghanistan. This multimedia exhibit builds upon the Government's commitment to better inform Canadians about our engagement in Afghanistan.

The Manley Panel and Parliamentary Motion both requested more frequent and direct communications about the work that Canadians are doing in Afghanistan; this Afghanistan360 is one way the government is reaching out directly to Canadians.

"This exhibit is a unique way for Canadians to learn about what their government is doing in Afghanistan," said Tim Kehoe, Director of FCM's International Centre for Municipal Development. "Showcasing this exhibit to Canada's mayors and municipal legislators gives local leaders an advance look at Afghanistan360 before it comes to their city or town in the coming months."

The Afghanistan360 exhibit will be on display at major events in Canada between now and 2011. Some confirmed locations include the Festival of Lights in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island at the end of June, the Calgary Stampede in July and the Tall Ships Nova Scotia Festival in Halifax from mid-July through to the beginning of August.
