Minister Paradis Positions Canada as a Key Player for Future Energy Security of APEC Economies

BEIJING, CHINA--(Marketwire - June 21, 2010) - The Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Natural Resources, participated in the Ninth Meeting of Asia–Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) energy ministers on June 19, 2010. Minister Paradis underscored Canada's ability to take a lead role in global energy security.

"The concept of energy security is evolving," said Minister Paradis. "With its abundant energy resources, Canada is an energy powerhouse that can help the world meet its energy needs while reducing environmental impacts."

"Natural gas is clean burning, and it is in abundant supply," added Minister Paradis. "APEC economies recognize that natural gas is important as we move toward a low carbon economy, and Canada is well placed to play a leadership role."

Minister Paradis stressed the need to diversify energy sources for the Asia–Pacific region, which accounts for approximately 60 percent of world energy demand. He highlighted Canada's commitment to developing its key strategic natural resources, such as natural gas and the oil sands.

Minister Paradis noted that the oil sands are a key strategic resource that will contribute to global energy security for decades to come. He also stressed the importance of natural gas, in particular unconventional gas, in moving toward a lower-carbon economy. The APEC energy ministers all agreed that fossil fuels will continue to play a key role in the APEC energy market as economies develop new and unconventional energy sources.

During the meeting, the Minister also highlighted the importance of investing in clean energy, including carbon capture and storage. "Many APEC economies recognize the virtue of carbon storage technology and its advantages for the future," said Minister Paradis.

APEC is an intergovernmental forum of 21 economies to facilitate economic growth, trade and investment in the Asia–Pacific region."
