Minister Ritz Announces Appointment to Farm Credit Canada

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 30, 2009) - Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz today announced the appointment of Carl Spencer to the Board of Directors of Farm Credit Canada (FCC).

"I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Spencer to the FCC Board," said Minister Ritz. "With more than four decades in farming as well as experience in feeder cattle financing, farm organizations and public service, Mr. Spencer will no doubt help farmers remain profitable and competitive in today's market."

Since 1959, FCC has grown to be Canada's largest provider of business and financial services to farm businesses. Through specialized and personalized business and financial solutions delivered out of 100 offices throughout mostly rural Canada, FCC works to meet the changing needs of the sector and to ensure its prosperity.

FCC reports to Canada's Parliament through the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Carl Spencer

A resident of Tara, Ontario, Carl Spencer has been owner and operator of a family farm since 1967. The farm covers 1,800 acres, with 300 beef cow and calf pairs and 550 head of stocker cattle. In addition, Mr. Spencer taps 1,500 trees each year to produce and sell maple syrup. His career in municipal politics, first in Derby Township, and, after amalgamation, Georgian Bluffs, featured terms as Finance Chairman, Deputy Mayor and Mayor. In the area of feeder financing, Mr. Spencer has held the positions of Chairman of the Ontario Association of Feeder Finance Clubs and Chairman of the Twin County Feeder Finance Co-operative. He was also Chairman of the Ontario Beginning Farmer Assistance Program Appeal Board. Mr. Spencer has a long history of involvement with the Grey County Cattlemen's Association and the Grey County Federation of Agriculture, holding memberships in both organizations since 1972. As well, he has served on the Ontario Nutrient Management Advisory Board, Ontario Beef Producers for Change, the Grey County Farm Safety Association, and the Canadian Farm Survival Association. Mr. Spencer graduated from the University of Guelph, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture.
