Minister of State Denis Lebel Reports on Canada Economic Development's Progress in Implementing Canada's Economic Action Plan

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Dec. 4, 2009) - The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, today presented a progress report on the application of the Canada's Economic Action Plan programs under his responsibility. This Plan provides for a record investment by the Government of Canada in the country's public infrastructure.

"The Government of Canada is providing concrete support to Quebec families, businesses and communities in their efforts to overcome the economic slowdown. In fact, through the Economic Action Plan adopted in January 2009, Canada Economic Development has awarded a total of $188.6 million in financial contributions to 203 projects in Quebec. These results clearly show that our actions have had an immediate positive impact and are helping to strengthen the long-term vitality and competitiveness of our economy," the Minister of State reported.

Through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada Program, an initiative implemented in partnership with the Government of Quebec, the Government of Canada has allocated $37.4 million for 2009-2010 for the renovation and upgrade of existing sports and recreational facilities like arenas, gymnasiums, pools, sports fields, parks and fitness trails.

Furthermore, through the Community Adjustment Fund, $115 million has been invested in the forest sector to help workers and communities weather the crisis. Administered by seven agreements with the Government of Quebec, this funding has helped finance various silvicultural as well as bridge and culvert restoration projects in the province.

"Canada's Economic Action Plan bears concrete results and illustrates our government's determination to help communities hit by the recession. With this well-targeted assistance, these communities are better able to take advantage of business opportunities, equip themselves with infrastructure that is both modern and better suited to their needs and create jobs," Minister Lebel concluded.
