Minister Strahl Announces Appointment of Nellie T. Kusugak as Deputy Commisioner of Nunavut

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 15, 2010) - The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Metis and Non-Status Indians, today announced the appointment of Ms. Nellie T. Kusugak to the position of Deputy Commissioner of Nunavut.

"Ms. Kusugak's years of teaching experience in Nunavut demonstrate her commitment to the future of the territory," said Minister Strahl. "As Deputy Commissioner she is well placed to further this commitment and work towards a brighter future for all Nunavummiut."

Ms. Kusugak is a professional bilingual teacher with an extensive background in traditional and cultural education, teaching English as a second language and working with community elders.

The Commissioner of Nunavut acts in accordance with any written instructions from the Governor in Council or the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development. The Deputy Commissioner is called upon to act if the Commissioner is unable to carry out his or her duties.

The position was created by the Nunavut Act and the appointment is made by Order-in-Council.

Biographical Note

Nellie T. Kusugak

Nellie T. Kusugak is a professional bilingual teacher with an extensive background in traditional and cultural education, teaching English as a second language and working with community elders.

Fluent in English and Inuktitut, Ms. Kusugak has been a prominent member of the education community since 1986. Most recently, she has been an instructor at Nunavut Arctic College in Rankin Inlet since 2007.

In her academic career, Ms. Kusugak was awarded Highest Academic Achievement several times.

In addition to Co-Chairing the Nunavut Teacher Education Program Review Panel in 2006, she is a member of several professional organizations such as the Nunavut Employee Union, Language Committee, Federation of Nunavut Teachers, Northwest Territories Teachers Association and the Professional Development Committee, Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik, Rankin Inlet.

Ms. Kusugak has also pursued various volunteer activities, including work with the Nunavut/Northwest Territories Registered Nurses Arbitration Committee and the Rankin Inlet District Education Council.
