Minister Thompson Marks Merchant Navy Veterans Day

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 2, 2009) - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, issued the following statement today regarding Merchant Navy Veterans Day.

"The history of Canada's Merchant Navy is one of remarkable accomplishments and great sacrifice. In both the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War, the ships and the volunteers who sailed on them helped make the difference between victory and defeat for the Allies.

When the very outcome of a war depended on the successful supply chain across open waters, our ships were there to protect, defend and deliver desperately needed equipment, fuel, goods and personnel to Europe and around the world.

The men and women of the Canadian Merchant Navy showed tremendous bravery on the ocean. They faced fierce attacks by enemy vessels and braved hazardous, life-threatening weather conditions. They did so with courage. They did so with pride.

On September 3, we will mark Merchant Navy Veterans Day in Canada, in recognition of the contributions made by Canada's Merchant Navy. The courage and determination of these men and women set an example for all of us. Lest we forget."
