Minister Van Loan Announces Appointment of Ian McPhail as Vice-Chair of the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 18, 2010) - The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of Public Safety, today issued the following statement announcing the appointment of Mr. Ian McPhail as Vice-Chair of the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP (CPC) for a period of one year. Mr. McPhail will also serve as interim Chair of the Commission.

"I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Ian McPhail as interim Chair of the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP (CPC)," said Minister Van Loan. "Mr. McPhail's success in a broad range of Board Chair positions reflects the federal government's commitment to making sure appointments are based on merit and ability."

Mr. McPhail, originally of Port Alberni, British Columbia, established McPhail Law in Toronto in 1972. He was appointed a federal Queen's Counsel in 1992. In 1999, he put his private practice on hold to serve on the boards of various organizations where he worked to protect the public interest.

He has served as Chair of the Ontario Environmental Review Tribunal, Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, Toronto Grace Hospital and Acting Chair of the Ontario Educational Communications Authority. He was a recipient of the Ontario Bicentennial Medal in recognition of his achievements.
