Minister Van Loan Welcomes Progress With Infrastructure Upgrades to RCMP Academy

REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN--(Marketwire - July 13, 2009) - The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of Public Safety, made the following statement after attending a graduation ceremony and seeing firsthand the results of the Government of Canada's investment in infrastructure at the RCMP Academy, "Depot" Division.

"Today I had the distinct pleasure of meeting the RCMP's most recent graduates - those who have now taken on a vital responsibility to help make our communities safer.

I was also encouraged to see the direct impact of this Government's investment of $150 million to help the RCMP improve, renovate and expand its infrastructure, including at this Academy.

Through this funding, we are helping current and future RCMP cadets and members maintain and enhance the skills they need to best protect Canadians."

Already completed work to modernize the Academy into a state-of-the-art training facility includes:

- a new 25-metre indoor firing range;

- a new food services building; and,

- a renovated Drill Hall

Other currently underway or planned projects include:

- a new auditorium;

- a new Simulator Training Centre, which includes a 250-seat auditorium;

- three new dormitories;

- an expanded gymnasium; and,

- upgrades to electrical facilities infrastructure.
