Minister of National Defence attends NATO Ministerial Meetings in Turkey

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 3, 2010) - The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, is in Istanbul, Turkey, this week, to participate in the NATO Informal Meeting of Defence Ministers. While in Istanbul, the Minister will also speak at Bilgi University.

"Canada remains committed to NATO and its contribution to international peace and stability. This meeting provides yet another great opportunity to strengthen our relationship with our NATO allies and to discuss security issues that affect us all," said Minister MacKay. "Obviously the mission in Afghanistan remains Canada's top international security priority and we will continue to help Afghans rebuild their country as a nation that is better governed, more peaceful and secure, and more prosperous."

The NATO meeting, chaired by NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, will also address issues such as NATO transformation and NATO operations in Kosovo.

Minister MacKay is being accompanied by Jack Harris, MP for St. John's East and NDP defence critic.

At Bilgi University, Minister MacKay will speak on "Canada, Turkey and the future of NATO" with a focus on Canada-Turkey relations and NATO's Strategic Concept Review.

Following his visit to Turkey, Minister MacKay will attend the Munich Security Conference from February 5 to 7, 2010, in Munich, Germany.

The next formal NATO Defence Ministers meeting is scheduled to be held on June 10-11 in Brussels, Belgium.
