Minister of Public Safety Marks 9/11

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 11, 2009) - The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of Public Safety, today made the following statement to mark the eighth anniversary of 9/11.

"The events that took place on September 11, 2001 continue to remind us that no one is immune to the threat of terrorism. On that day, terror hit not only our American neighbours, but also Canadian citizens and our shared values. Today, we remember with sorrow those who lost their lives in that atrocity, and those whose lives it changed forever.

We remain committed to preventing and deterring terrorism. We introduced the Justice for Victims of Terrorism Act - which would allow victims to sue perpetrators and supporters of terrorism, to seek redress for losses or damages resulting from terrorist acts. It will create a more difficult environment for terrorists to finance terror activities.

Today the Government stands side by side with the victims of terrorism. The Government of Canada will continue to be vigilant in taking action to help ensure the security of Canada, and the safety of all Canadians."
