Miramichi Residents to Benefit From New Transit Buses

MIRAMICHI, NEW BRUNSWICK--(Marketwire - June 26, 2009) - Tilly O'Neill-Gordon, Member of Parliament for Miramichi; the Honourable Denis Landry, New Brunswick's Minister of Transportation; and Mr. Gerry Cormier, Mayor of Miramichi, announced today more than $421,000 in capital funding from the Government of Canada's Public Transit Capital Trust fund.

"Our Government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, is working with provincial partners to provide cities and communities with funding for their infrastructure needs that will support the economy and the environment," said MP O'Neill-Gordon. "These new buses will be important additions to the city's transit system, creating new jobs and improving residents' daily commute."

"The Government of New Brunswick is pleased to work with the Government of Canada to deliver transit service in Miramichi," said Minister Landry. "This continues our emphasis on the importance of sustainable transportation and a better, cleaner environment. We hope this agreement can be a model for other New Brunswick cities to develop transit systems."

"This is an exciting day for the residents in our community," stated Mayor Cormier. "We look forward to offering a service for our youth and seniors alike. A strong transit system is important for economic development. Potential employers are attracted to communities with regular bus service to and from key locations and residential areas."

The agreement to fund these buses was reached in December 2008. Funding for this project comes from the federal government's Public Transit Capital Trust and is administered by the Province of New Brunswick through the Regional Development Corporation. In Budget 2008, the Government of Canada provided $500 million for the Public Transit Capital Trust, which helps to fund public transit projects such as rapid transit, transit buses, and high occupancy vehicle and bicycle lanes.

The municipality is finalizing its transit routes and the buses are scheduled to be in service in August.
