MobileRobots Inc and Focus Robotics Join Forces to Improve 3D Sensing for Robots, AGVs and UGVs

MobileRanger™ Stereo Vision Cuts Costs and Processing Overhead for Autonomous Navigation

AMHERST, NH and HUDSON, NH--(Marketwire - April 29, 2008) - MobileRobots Inc and Focus Robotics announced today their new MobileRanger stereo vision systems for mobile robots, industrial automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) with autonomous guidance and navigation. MobileRanger raises the bar on price/performance for stereo vision.

Stereo vision systems are used to measure distance between the camera and objects around a robot, AGV or UGV. Robot software employs such measurements to avoid obstacles and plan a path to destinations. Stereo vision sensors to date have required too much processing power to be deployed effectively in anything but large, slow, expensive robots.

MobileRanger combines Focus Robotics' nDepth Stereo Vision Processor along with MobileRobots' robust, pre-calibrated indoor and outdoor stereocams. By handling processing, MobileRanger frees the robot's computing resources for other tasks. The system also processes 3D ranging data faster than current leading stereo vision systems, at a similar price. Less computing means lower battery load and smaller robot size. Increased processing speed means robots can travel faster safely.

MobileRanger is compatible with any robot, AGV or UGV with onboard PCI (indoors only) or PC104+ PC running Linux or WIN. Pan-tilt units, requiring RS-232 interface, are also available.

Established in 1995, MobileRobots Inc has sold over three thousand robots and provides intelligent navigation platforms, systems and accessories to end-users, OEMs and VARs worldwide. Customers include: BAE, GM, Microsoft, the US Army and the US Navy. MobileRobots runs its R&D, manufacturing and administrative operations from a 25,000 square-foot facility in Amherst, NH, fifty miles northwest of Boston.
