Modern Woodmen and McGruff Safe Kids™ Team Up to "Take A Bite Out Of Crime"®

ROCK ISLAND, IL--(Marketwire - February 24, 2010) - Modern Woodmen of America and McGruff the Crime Dog® are joining forces to help America "Take A Bite Out Of Crime"®. Beginning in 2010, Modern Woodmen's Safety and Life Skills Program will provide the McGruff Safe Kids ID Kit available to schools and youth groups nationwide.

The McGruff Safe Kids ID Kit provides valuable and timely safety information for families with children, together with an easy-to-use fingerprint identification system. The child ID kit features the National Crime Prevention Council's (NCPC) famous icon, McGruff the Crime Dog, who is known to children and adults alike through a 29-year public service campaign effort that encourages all to "Take A Bite Out Of Crime."

"The McGruff Safe Kids ID Kit is a powerful tool," said Keri Rursch, who manages Modern Woodmen's Youth Educational Programs. "It's a great complement to our Safety and Life Skills Program, and we'll be able to provide this tool to more than 500,000 children in communities nationwide."

The McGruff Safe Kids ID Kit contains proprietary, microencapsulated fingerprint ink, plus an easy-to-use format to include a description and photograph of the child. Research has shown that when children are missing, it is helpful for parents and police to have fingerprints, vital statistics and a current photo on hand. The McGruff Child ID Kit also contains safety rules for parents and children, including an updated section on social networking safety. Instructive material is presented within an interactive, fun, non-threatening, game-like framework. The most important objective for the McGruff Safe Kids ID Kit is prevention. It helps to prepare children to play and live safely in their communities.

Ann M. Harkins, President and CEO of the National Crime Prevention Council, calls the McGruff Safe Kids ID Kit a "strong safety resource for parents and children." Ms. Harkins said, "NCPC's message is that individuals can and do make a difference in preventing crimes against children. We applaud Modern Woodmen for providing this vital tool for children and their families to learn about safety and crime prevention from McGruff the Crime Dog." NCPC is the national focal point for community crime prevention. NCPC's mission is to help people keep themselves, their families, and their communities safe from crime. To achieve this, NCPC produces tools that communities can use to learn crime prevention strategies, engage community members, and coordinate with local agencies. In the last 29 years more than $1.3 billion in public service advertising support has helped to make McGruff the Crime Dog the preeminent icon in the fight against crime in America.

Founded in 1883, Modern Woodmen of America touches lives and secures futures. The fraternal benefit society offers financial services and fraternal member benefits to individuals and families throughout the United States.

McGruff Safe Kids is a 17-year licensee of the National Crime Prevention Council.
