Moisson Montreal Confident Despite a Decrease in Donations

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Dec. 14, 2009) - Moisson Montreal held its annual Christmas Bee on Saturday to sort the goods received during La grande guignolee des medias day. Approximately fifty generous volunteers, including Clodine Desrochers, celebrity spokesperson for Moisson Montreal, Guy Lafleur, Jasmin Roy and Stephane Dion participated. Although the country's largest food bank received fewer goods this year, its executives remain confident, given that the drive continues until December 24th. Montrealers can donate foodstuffs and money in Groupe Jean Coutu stores, in Subway restaurants at La Banque Laurentienne and online at www.lagrandeguignoleedesmedias.com.

"The bad temperature and the economic crisis have made our work more difficult, admits Johanne Theroux, Executive director of Moisson Montreal. That said, our call for help is being heard, as is proven by the $250 000 donation made by the ministers of the Quebec government to the province's 18 food banks. We hope that this response to an urgent situation will serve as an example."

Moisson Montreal invites those who can help to participate in the drive, as the demand for urgent food assistance is on the rise. The organisation is reassured this year by foodstuff donations of superior quality and by the care given to packages donated during La grande guignolee des medias day.

Poverty, calculated:

- 115 467 persons are served on a monthly basis by Moisson Montreal.

- 12 252 households visit food counters at least 3 times per month. This represents a 32 % increase over last year.

- 39 605 children are dependent upon Moisson Montreal. Children represent more than one-third of those who receive support.

- The number of employed Montrealers turning to food supply support has increased by 78% in 2009.
