Molson Donates $25,000 to Help Finish New Lashburn Sportsplex

LASHBURN, SASKATCHEWAN--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 16, 2007) - Canada's oldest brewer today donated $25,000 towards the completion of the Lashburn sportsplex, hoping to complete the facility in rural Saskatchewan in time for next hockey season.

"Molson is more than just Canada's oldest brewer - we are a community builder," said Molson sales manager Barry Thomson. "There is no better way for Molson to help build community spirit in Lashburn than to help finish this community centre.

"Being a community builder means being part of the heart and soul of activity in each and every community where Molson and its employees live, work and play - and we're proud to play our part here in Lashburn."

When completed, the $4-million, 450-seat sportsplex will include a hockey rink and will host rodeos, indoor soccer, volleyball and 4H trade shows. The building has been under construction since 1999 and organizers hope it will be completed for the 2008 hockey season.

"This sportsplex will really be a great asset for the community of Lashburn," said sportsplex treasurer Russell Schemenauer. "Thanks to Molson, our community is one step closer to our dream of having this facility finished as quickly as possible so families and friends can start enjoying it."

The sportsplex still needs about $2.5 million in capital funding to complete the building. Organizers are hoping to draw in more funding by selling the naming rights to the facility. In December, organizers applied to Regina for a provincial grant to finally complete the sportsplex.

"We welcome Molson's wonderful contribution to our community," added Michael Chisholm, Saskatchewan Party MLA for Cut Knife-Turtleford. "This facility will be vital to the quality of life in Lashburn, an asset to the entire region, and we are delighted that Molson is supporting community spirit and recreation in small Canadian towns like ours."

Lashburn is a community of 800 people in west central rural Saskatchewan on the Yellowhead Highway between North Battleford and Canada's border town of Lloydminster.
