More Than Half of Van Drivers Working Over 50 Hours Per Week

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Oct. 5, 2009) - UK Van drivers are working over 50 hours each week during the recession, according to a research by Swinton Commercial.

A survey of 1,000 van insurance customers found that 59% are working more than fifty hours a week, with a staggering 23% reaching up to sixty hours.

According to the survey, UK van drivers claimed they are now putting in more hours than ever before to beat the recession and admit to spending most of their time spent driving on motorways.

Swinton is offering the following advice to van drivers putting in long working hours on the road:

- Before setting off on a long day, check the air pressure and condition of the tyres

- Check all lights and signals are working properly

- Stay alert on the road during the day and dark nights by stopping to take regular breaks.

- Early afternoon is a high risk period to lapse in concentration, so avoid driving if feeling fatigued

Phil Moss, Commercial Vehicle Insurance Manager at Swinton, said: "Van drivers are cramming more hours of work into each day than ever before to keep businesses afloat during the recession. In some cases, many people are working through the weekend too, just to help make ends meet.

"Any driver who feels tired while driving should pull over in a safe place and get some rest until they feel fit to continue the journey safely."
