Motorcyclists in Favour of Bike Scrappage Scheme Reveals Swinton Bikes

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Feb. 21, 2010) - Motorcyclists are largely in favour of the bike scrappage scheme, according to a survey of customers by Swinton Bikes.

An online survey of 1,200 customers by Swinton Bikes, one of the UK's leading motorbike insurance brokers, found that almost 50% would be encouraged to buy a new motorbike if the scrappage scheme were to be put in place.

With sales of motorcycles dipping in 2009, the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI) has called for measures to boost bike purchases, following the success of the car scrappage scheme.

According to reports, a total of 111,513 motorcycles, scooters and mopeds were sold in the UK last year - 20% fewer than in 2008.

The MCI is calling for local authorities, transport planners and the Government to view motorcycling as an alternative to the use of cars and public transport.

Anthony Aronin, Head of Swinton Bikes, one of the UK's leading motorbike insurance brokers said: "The UK motorcycle industry plays an important role in the UK economy. The car scrappage scheme has had a very positive effect on car sales since it was introduced in May last year and a motorbike scrappage scheme would be a great incentive to encourage people to trade in older bikes.

"Both Italy and Spain currently run scrappage schemes for motorcycles and scooters that are over ten years old and we believe that the UK should follow suit."
