MyBuys Reports E-Commerce Wellness Index Down 10% in January

First Month of 2010 Has Revenues Down and a Return to Discount Pricing

REDWOOD CITY, CA--(Marketwire - February 9, 2010) - MyBuys, the leading provider of personalized recommendations for retailers, today released the MyBuys E-commerce Wellness Index™ for January 2010, which measures the overall health of U.S. e-commerce and tracks key trends among retailers. The January Index reports a median 7.5% decrease in total e-commerce revenues relative to January 2009. Revenues from products sold at full price decreased by 11% in January, in stark contrast to the 30% increase in full price sales from the month prior. Total revenues from discounted items increased by 44% in January, up substantially from the 19% increase in December, but still markedly lower than the 100-plus percent increases that predominated the latter half of 2009.

The MyBuys E-Commerce Wellness Index score for January was down just over 10%, the lowest number registered since the Index was created in August 2009. The previous low was (-2.7%), recorded in August 2009.

"December was a strong showing for e-commerce, with the Index hitting an all-time high of 20%, but the upward trend was short-lived as January came in at a new record low," said Robert Cell, CEO. "The strength of December's sales more than offset the downturn in January, but the slow start to the year creates a hole that retailers will need to fill in order to climb back into positive growth for 2010. While sales of discounted items grew by nearly half, this was not enough to counter the downward movement in full-priced goods. The bright spot continues to be strategies such as personalization, which steadily proves to be an effective, reliable strategy for increasing sales of non-discounted products."

Total revenue from discounted goods was up 44% in January 2010 versus the year prior, with the average discount rate increasing by 13%, growing from just under 26% in January 2009 to over 29% in January 2010.
